In 2004, Carl Rockefeller started a new hobby that soon became a business for him. Now, he owns and operates CMR Laser Designs LLC. Carl makes Christmas ornaments, awards, personalized items, does tile work and so much more. "I was only looking for a hobby - something to keep me busy - and discovered the Epilog Laser in 2004," Carl said.
The Challenge: Finding a hobby.
Carl, having just recently retired from working in the retail sector for 27 years, began looking for a new hobby to keep him occupied. He wanted to do something creative and fun. "I decided to get back into some form of graphics and printing as a hobby," he said.
During his search for a new hobby, he discovered CO2 laser engravers. "I was scrolling through a wood industry magazine and began reading an article about inlay woodwork that mentioned Epilog Laser. Having always been intrigued with new tools I decided to research CO2 lasers, what they were and what they did. After doing so, I purchased one," explains Carl.
"When I first looked into CO2 lasers, I also looked at Epilog's competitors. Nothing matched what Epilog had to offer. Epilog Laser provides service, Roy Hatley, the Epilog Laser distributor for his area, said he would be here to back it up," Carl continued.
In fact, Carl has since taken advantage of Epilog Laser's Tech Support line, the Sample Club downloads and techniques on how to do and make new items for his business. He mainly shows his work at arts and crafts shows and gets business that way or word of mouth. "The machine solicits itself, especially at shows. When I have it running cutting and engraving people are amazed," Carl stated.
Carl has done some of his own charity work with his machine by giving donations of his products to customer's families who are fighting the war. "If a little ornament is going to make one man happy who is fighting the war, than that is the least I can do and it is absolutely worth it for me," Carl says.
