What are the computer requirements for running an Epilog laser?
Learn more about the hardware requirements for running your Epilog Laser machine.
Investing in a new computer is a great way to make sure you’re getting the most out of your new laser equipment. Why? Because today’s software requires a lot of computer processing speed and memory to function properly. While a top-of-the-line computer might not directly impact your laser’s performance, having a modern machine can significantly enhance your graphic design workflow. Today’s design software demands substantial processing power and memory to run smoothly. Upgrading to a new system can save you countless hours of frustration and lost time, especially when working on complex projects.
A new computer doesn’t have to be expensive to work well! Even many of today’s lower-cost computers work well for laser applications. You will be fine if you don’t buy a cheap computer and follow our minimum requirements and recommendations. One thing to avoid is the Intel Celeron processor. While they are good processors and will work with the laser, they don’t meet the basic requirements of most graphic design programs available for installation today.
Minimum Requirements:
-
Windows 7, Windows 8.1, Windows 10, or Windows 11
-
Operating system should have all system updates before installation
-
Support for OpenGL 3.0 (or higher) or OpenGL 2.0ES (or higher)
-
4GB RAM or more
-
2 processor cores or more
-
Processor can be any Intel i3/i5/i7, AMD Ryzen 3/5/7, AMD A4/A6/A8/A10/A12/FX
-
Integrated gigabit ethernet is not required, but is nice to have.
Recommended Specifications:
-
8GB RAM or more
-
4 processor cores or more
-
Processor can be any Intel i5/i7, AMD Ryzen 5/7, AMD A6/A8/A10/A12/FX
Design Program Info & Requirements
Memory (RAM)
16GB of RAM is ideal, with 8GB being the absolute minimum for basic functionality. Higher RAM allows you to work with larger files and run multiple programs simultaneously without lag.
Processor Speed
A faster processor will allow you to do more tasks in less time. While it’s not necessary to purchase the fastest processor available, you’ll want either an AMD Athlon processor or an Intel Pentium IV processor (do not purchase a computer that is using an Intel Celeron processor – they’re too slow for graphics applications). Processor speeds are always improving, but processor speeds of about 2.0 GHz or faster are a good place to start.
Storage
Opt for a solid-state drive (SSD) with at least 512GB of storage, the most you can afford is the best approach here. SSDs offer faster software loading times and faster file transfer speeds than traditional hard drives.
Graphics card (GPU)
While not essential for basic design work, a dedicated graphics card with at least 2GB of dedicated VRAM can significantly improve performance, especially when working with complex visuals, 3D elements, or video editing.
10/100 Network Interface Card (NIC)
As standard equipment, all new computers have a 10/100 network connection. As well as allowing multiple computers to be linked together in a network, this technology also allows direct printing from the computer to the Epilog system. Epilog supplies a network Crossover cable with each laser system that allows one computer to print to a single Epilog system.
Display
Choose a display with a high resolution (1920×1080 or higher) and accurate color reproduction for optimal viewing and editing experience.
