Technical Library: Tiling a Graphic in CorelDRAW

Looking for a quick and easy way to tile a graphic across several pieces? Here is the quickest, easiest way to create any size of tiled engraving with CorelDRAW.

For this project, we will be tiling this train graphic over six 12" x 12" ceramic tiles. To start, we place our graphic on a page set up at 36” x 24”, the equivalent of all six tiles lined up. Check out the flash demonstration of this technique by clicking here.

1)
First we want to create a series of 12” x 12” boxes over the top of our train graphic. The graph tool will quickly create just the grid pattern that we need.

Click on the Graph Tool circled in red on the toolbar on the left side of the page.

After the Graph Tool is selected, you can set the number of columns and rows that we will be breaking up our image into. For this file we will be using 3 columns and 2 rows. Enter this information into the box inside the blue square at the top of the page.

2)

With the Graph Tool still selected, click and drag from one corner of the page to the opposite corner of the page. The graph you draw over your image should have the number of rows and columns you specified above.

3)

To make sure the grid is made up of squares that are exactly 12" x 12" in size, we'll set the size of the grid to 36" x 24".

Select the Pick Tool in the tool bar on the left side of the screen and select the grid. In the box at the top of the page inside the blue square, enter 36" and 24" into the correct boxes.

Center the grid to the page by typing the letter 'P' with the grid selected.

4)

Send the grid behind the train graphic by pressing Shift + Page Down with the grid selected.

Now we need to place the train inside of our new grid. To do this, we are going to use Corel's PowerClip feature. With the train selected, click Effects in the Menu Bar (circled in red).

5)

In the drop-down menu that appears, select PowerClip, then Place Inside Container.

For more information on PowerClip and how to update graphics after they have been placed in a container, go to /tl_powerclip.htm.

  6)

Now you can select the container we want to place the train inside. Click on any of the grid showing up around the train. The image has now been centered inside the six tiles.

Right click on the grid and select Ungroup to make the pieces into six individual tiles.

  7)

Select the first tile you want to print and select Print under the File menu.

On the print screen that comes up, select Selection (circled in red) for you print range, and click on the Layout tab at the top of the page (circled in blue).

  8) On the Layout tab, select Reposition images to, then in the drop-down menu choose Top Left Corner. This will allow us to print any tile we select to the laser, positioning the tile at the top left corner of the engraver.
  9)

Enter the print properties (speed, power, etc.), and set the page size to the size of an individual tile (12" x 12").

Finally, print the image to the laser, and you're done!

  10)

Repeat this process by selecting each tile and printing it.

Engrave each tile separately, then put them together for a great engraved image!
