Technical Library: CorelDRAW PowerClip Objects

PowerClip in Corel is similar to a mask in other graphic software programs. It is a very useful feature when you want to crop an image, such as a photograph or a piece of clipart, to the edges of a specific shape or object. Below we will look at how you can use this feature to create a PowerClip object, edit the contents of the object, lock or unlock the contents, and extract your image back out of the PowerClip format.

1)

Creating a PowerClip Object
To start, import your image that you want to crop. We have imported a clipart of the Chicago skyline for this project.

2)

Draw your container - this will be the shape that we want to fit the clipart into. You can use any shape that you want - a circle, square, star, whatever vector shape you want.

3)

With the clipart selected, go to the Effects menu and choose PowerClip, Place Inside Container.

4)

Your cursor will turn into a large black arrow. Point at the container object (in this case, the circle) that we want to fit the image inside (Pict A). Your image will then look like Pict B with the Chicago skyline fit inside the circle.

5)

You can use any variety of shapes to create cool effects that will really make your designs stand out!

Next we will look at how you can change the clipart image after you have placed it inside the container.

Editing the PowerClip
After you have changed your image into a PowerClip image, it will now act as a grouped image, moving along with the shape you have created. But what if you want to change the image's color, shading, or other properties?

1)

To edit your image, right click on the image and choose Edit Contents (Pict A). The image will appear full size (no longer cropped) with the container grayed out in the background (Pict B). You can now, change the shading of the objects or make any other necessary changes.

2)

To return the image to the container, right click on the image and choose Finish Editing This Level.

1)
Unlock the Content of the PowerClip
You can also move the container without moving the image you have cropped by right clicking on the image and de-selecting Lock Contents to PowerClip.

2)

Now you still can not select the clipart, but you can change the relative position of the image to the circle by moving the circle, or changing the size of the circle. When you are done positioning the circle, right click and re-select Lock Contents to PowerClip.

1)
Extracting the PowerClip
If you decide you no longer want to have the clipart cropped to the container and want to remove it from the PowerClip, right click and select Extract From PowerClip. You will now be able to move each of the parts of your file separately.
