Technical Library: Working with Laserable Foils
Laser foils can add an unique touch to your engraving.
These colored sheets of plastic have an adhesive backside
to stick to your engraving project.

The foils come in rolls, available in many colors, including gold, silver, red,
blue, and black. Available from LaserBits,
as well as many other laser product retailers, the foil adds a great perceived
value to your engraved products, and makes engraving stand out, especially on
dark woods. |

2)
|
Cut
a piece of foil off of the roll larger than the area
you are going to engrave. Peel off the backing on the
foil, and apply it over the area you will be engraving.
The excess material will peel off after you cut out
the area you are engraving. |
|
 |
| |
3)
|
When you setup your file, anywhere that is
engraved will turn black, like the text, ship, and
thick black outline in this graphic. Anywhere with
a vector line will be cut out.
To
cut out the area, set your vector line to .001".
You will want to play with your vector settings on
the laser because you want to cut through the foil
without cutting into the wood itself. A high speed
and low power works well to accomplish this. |
|
 |
| |
4)
|
When the laser has finished cutting, you can peel the
excess material off of the engraving. If you have
cut completely through the foil, you will find
that it removes easily from most materials.

5)
|
You can also use the foil to cut out a vector line inside your piece, like
the text in the photo to the right. By creating a vector line around
the letters, we cut out the text and carefully removed the foil from
inside the letters so that the wood showed through the foil.
|
|
 |
| |
6)
|
With the AHS to the right, we created a vector line around the letters
but instead of weeding out the letters from the background, we peeled
off the outer section of the foil, leaving the letters on our engraving.

 |
| |
There are many different ways to use foils in your engraving. Play around and
find the products you like it best on. By using foil, you increase the perceived
value of the engraving piece with a unique look that stands out!
