Removing the Text Outline
First,
we're going to delete the sections of the letters
that are not connected to the rest of
the angel outline (like the inside of the "o" and "e".
Select the Pick Tool in the tool bar (circled in red
below), then click on the outline to those parts of
the letters and click delete.

|
| |
2) |
Next, with the Shape Tool selected (circled
in red), drag a box around some of the nodes you want
to delete (the points that make up the outline of the
letters.) This will select only those nodes in the
line. Click delete to remove them.

|
 |
| |
3)
|
Continue to select nodes until all that remains are
curved lines connecting the dots, like below.
|
 |
| |
4)
|
Right click with your mouse on one of the end-points
of the curve, and choose Break Apart, then click
delete. If the curve does not disappear, make sure
that you have the last node on the line selected,
or if the wrong line disappears, try clicking on
the node at the other end of the line and breaking
it apart, then deleting it.
|
 |
| |
5)
|
When you have removed all of the letters to the word, the image should
look like the picture below. Next we have to connect the lines back together.
|
 |
| |
6)
|
To connect these lines back together, first we must
combine the lines into one object. Select the Pick
Tool from the tool bar and draw a box around the
entire picture. Right click on the object and choose "combine" from
the menu.
|
 |
| |
7)
|
Now
we can connect the nodes in the disconnected lines.
Choose the Shape Tool from the tool bar, and click
the first
node of the lines you want to connect, hold down
shift, and click the second node so that both turn
into black boxes, like below.
|
 |
| |
8)
|
With the two nodes selected, click on the "Extend
Curve to Close" button in the tool bar at the
top of the screen (circled in red.) This will connect
the two lines. Continue doing this with each disconnect
line until they are all connected.
|
 |
| |
9) |
When
all of the lines have been connected, type in the text
you want to cut out. Use a cursive font where the letters
connect (so they don't fall out after we cut them).
We used a Brush Script font and typed the name "Ciara." Place
the name, making sure the edges of the text overlaps
the edges of the inner circle of the angel.

|
 |
| |
10) |
Finally,
click on the name, hold down shift, and click on the
angel to select the two objects you want to connect.
Click on the Weld button in the toolbar at the top
of the page (circled in red.) This will change the
name into an outline, and connect the line to the angel.
Now you can cut out a beautiful ornament that has been
customized for your client!
