Sample Club: Engraved Shell Necklace

Jewelry manufacturers are using more materials than ever in their creations. New and innovative materials such as sea shells, natural stone and various woods have opened a world of engraving possibilities in this arena. Already a very personal gift, laser engraving jewelry takes personalization one step further - making it truly unique for the recipient.

Here we'll explain how we engraved a natural shell pendant with the Hopi Indian symbol for "mother-child." The dark shell pendant produced wonderful results, but you can use the design on jewelry made most any natural material or coated metal surface, such as a brooch or set of earrings.

This beautiful pendant coupled with a silver chain and meaningful symbol make for a very unique and thoughtful gift.

 



 

Materials:

  • Large Round Shell Engraveable Pendant - available from 925Express.
  • Silver chain, also available from 925Express.

NOTE: Since these materials are organic, no two pendants will be exactly the same. We recommend resizing the symbol to best fit the surface area of the shell.

Our design is one inch in diameter, centered on a the pendant that is slightly under two inches in diameter.

Files: Right click the file below and choose "Save target as." Open the file in CorelDraw 8 or later.

The Epilog system used for this project was a 45 watt Helix.

  • First, open the file sc_shell_pendant.cdr
  • Draw a vector circle around the symbol.
  • Open the print driver and select "Center-Center". If you do not have that option, alter the page size to fit the dimensions of the pendant.
  • With the red dot pointer on, select "X/Y Off" on the keypad.
  • Move the beam to the middle of the object and press the "Set Home" key.
  • With the laser lid open, run only the vector job to ensure your symbol will engrave in the correct place.
  • When you are certain the design will engrave in your desired location, remove the vector circle and run only the raster job.
  • On a 45-watt Helix, we used the following settings:
    RASTER SPEED: 80%
    RASTER POWER: 90%
