Chess, a game of skill dating back to the 6th - 11th centuries, was designed to be played as if you were on the battlefield itself, two opposing sides with the objective being one king must surrender. Since its origin, the modern day version of chess began in the 1500's, with the first tournament taking place in London in the mid 1800's.
We've created this beautiful inlaid board out of three different types of wood. Download the files for the chessboard below and follow the instructions to create your own beautiful board!
Materials:
1/8" thick sheet of wood (such as alder)
1/8" sheet of wood (such as maple)
1/8" sheet of wood (such as walnut)
Roll of 3M double stick tape
12" x 12" piece of wood to attach chessboard
Files: Right click the file below and choose "Save target as." Open the file in CorelDraw 8 or later.
When you open the file, set your zoom levels at the top to "to fit." This will give you the entire picture of how we broke down the board to create the individual pieces. The board size for this file is 12" x 12", but you can adjust the file to change the size of the board any way that you want.

What are you looking at:
The light pink box is what is currently in the engraving area. Since our wood is cut into pieces that are 14.5 " x 9", that is the page size that we set up. Located currently on this page are half of the squares to be cut out.
Located above the page is the chessboard as the file looks when all pieces are put together.
To the left of that we separated the 64 squares that makes up the inside of the chessboard. You can ungroup these squares and create your own designs as you wish or you can use the pattern we have already created.
To the left of that are the rectangular shaped pieces which make up the inside boarder of the board.
Finally, the outside boarder of the chessboard with the stars located inside. chessboard with the stars located inside.

On the back side of the sheet of wood panels you will be using, place double stick tape across the entire sheet. You don't need to cover the entire piece, just enough that every piece that will be cut out will have the tape on back.

Select the sections of the file you want to Vector cut first and run it on the respective wood you choose for those pieces. After you have completed cutting all your pieces, remove the backing from the double stick tape and place each piece on a solid 12" x 12" board to create your very own chessboard.
Remember this is your board so you can be as creative as you want with your designs. Have fun!
