Giraffe and Gorilla Wood Puzzles

Start your own animal menagerie with our fun Giraffe and Gorilla 3D puzzles. Each one can be cut out of wood, acrylic, plastic, or many other materials.

We have included three different puzzles for you to download and create below - an outline of the giraffe, an outline of the gorilla, and a giraffe that has been designed with spots. Play with the files and create your own fun designs, or give one to your kids to paint with their own original designs!

Materials:
  • 1/8" thick sheet of wood (such as alder)
Files: Right click on the file below and choose "Save target as." Open the file in CorelDraw 8 or later.

1)

Start with your material. In this case we used a 14.5" x 4.5" piece of alder. Open the file you want to create - either the giraffe, the filled giraffe, or the gorilla.

If you are using the giraffe or the gorilla that are outlines only, you can print them as Vector only files. If you are using the filled giraffe, send it to the laser as a combined file.

2)

If you are using different thickness of wood than 1/8", you will need to adjust the slots of the puzzle. For step-by-step instructions on how to do this, go to www.epiloglaser.com/tl_puzzleslots.htm.

3)

When creating the filled giraffe, you will want to engrave both sides of the puzzle pieces. To do this, we need to flip the piece of wood over after it has been engraved and cut, and also flip over the file in Corel before we send it to the laser.

To prepare the file for engraving the second side, draw a box the same size as your piece of wood around the files (Image A). Select everything on the page, right click the mouse, and select Group from the menu that appears (Image B).

Next we need to mirror the image, so with your grouped item selected, click the Mirror Vertically button on the toolbar (Image C).

Now your piece should look like Image D, with the giraffe's head in the bottom right corner of the file. Take out the piece of wood that you have engraved and cut for the first side, flip it over vertically so the giraffe's head is now at the bottom right corner of the piece of wood, and send the file to the laser - this time as raster only.

4)

Finally you are ready to put your puzzles together. Use the photo below and the labeled files at the right to see how each piece fits together.
