Layered Mystery Box

Submitted by: Clayton Moraga

Description: The box you see to the right is the outermost layer of a series of encasements, each different but related in concept to the preceding.

Packaging is not a distraction. How many layers must be destroyed before it is realized that the pieces we hold are the better than what lies within? Time will tell. Peeling away all the layers you could possibly hope for, and then one too many.

The top and bottom come apart along a seam where the two sections meet. The intersection of top and bottom is either locked together with padlocks or covered by wood laps. Each padlock is different and requires its unique key to open. The top and bottom are matched is such a way that the two halves cannot be separated until all the locks are opened. Handles at each side of the top portion grant the inquisitor a bit of leverage for lifting the fop off.

This photo above shows a bit of the internal frame – without giving too much away. The frame is a 2x2 pine held together by glued-in wooden dowels. It is constructed not too differently than the framework of a Shoji screen, but without the paper.
