Laser Cutting Plastic with an Epilog Laser System

You can use Epilog's laser engraving and cutting systems to cut through plastics of various thicknesses. Using this relatively inexpensive material, you can create signage, cut acrylic parts, and much more.

Depending upon the wattage of the machine, Epilog's systems can cut through up to an inch of plastic. The various signage to the left was engraved and cut entirely from laserable plastic, ranging in thickness from one-eighth of an inch to one-quarter of an inch.

Anything else I should know about plastic?
Here are a few tips to keep in mind when cutting plastic:
  • Use a Vector Grid to elevate the plastic before cutting.
  • Air Assist will greatly reduce flaming when cutting plastic.
  • Plastics that are up to one-sixteenth of an inch thick can usually be cut in a single pass.
  • Thicker plastics may need two passes.
  • As with engraving, it is sometimes necessary to mask and dampen the plastic before cutting.
  • Masking and wetting both front and backsides of the plastic is desirable on sensitive plastics that have very low melting points.
  • Never leave your laser unattended when vector cutting plastics!
  • Do not engrave PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride). PVC will destroy the optics and mechanics of your equipment.
